View full detailsFlour sack dish towels are the hardest-working cotton kitchen linens in the kitchen — and the most versatile fabric for embroidery and printing. Made from 100% heavyweight cotton with a tight diagonal weave, our flour sack kitchen towels are naturally absorbent, completely lint-free, and softer with every wash. Whether you know them as cotton tea towels, cotton dish towels, or flour sack tea towels, the construction is the same: a premium flat-woven cotton that outperforms every polyester alternative.
Mary's Kitchen Towels has been supplying premium cotton flour sack dish towels since 2006. Available in white, natural unbleached, and eight colors — find exactly what you need for your kitchen, embroidery project, or custom printing run.
The name comes from the 1800s, when homemakers repurposed cotton flour sacks into kitchen towels prized for absorbency, strength, and softness. Today's flour sack dish towels preserve that same flat-woven cotton construction.
In the UK and Australia, these are called cotton tea towels — the same product with a different regional name. What Americans call flour sack kitchen towels, British kitchens call tea towels. The flat diagonal cotton weave maximizes surface contact with wet dishes, dries faster than terry cloth, and leaves zero lint — making them ideal as cotton dish towels, embroidery blanks, and bread-proofing cloths.
Five sizes cover every kitchen task and craft project. All sizes available in white (bleached) or natural (unbleached). The 27″ × 27″ is our most popular for embroidery, printing, and gifting — available in eight colors.
Few kitchen textiles match the versatility of cotton flour sack dish towels. Here are the most common uses — and why 100% cotton construction matters for each:
The average U.S. household uses over 100 rolls of paper towels per year. Switching to reusable cotton flour sack dish towels or cotton tea towels eliminates that waste entirely. Each towel withstands hundreds of washes and improves with every cycle.
"Flour sack towels," "tea towels," "dish towels," and "cotton kitchen towels" are often used interchangeably — but construction and performance differ meaningfully:
| Feature | Flour Sack / Tea Towels | Standard Dish Towels | Terry Cloth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weave Type | Tight diagonal cotton | Varies (waffle/huck) | Loop pile |
| Lint-Free | ✓ Yes | Sometimes | ✗ No |
| Good for Embroidery | ✓ Excellent | Depends on weave | ✗ No |
| Good for Printing | ✓ Excellent | Fair | ✗ No |
| Absorbency | High — no lint | Medium | High but leaves lint |
| Bread Proofing | ✓ Ideal | Varies | ✗ Poor |
| Improves with Washing | ✓ Gets softer | Varies | Degrades over time |
Blank cotton flour sack tea towels are a natural canvas — artists, crafters, and kitchen gift businesses use them as the starting point for high-value printed and embroidered products:

Essentially yes — flour sack towels and cotton tea towels describe the same product: flat-woven, 100% cotton kitchen towels with a tight diagonal weave. The difference is regional. In the U.S. they're called flour sack dish towels or flour sack kitchen towels, referencing the cotton flour sacks repurposed as kitchen textiles in the 19th century. In the UK, Australia, and much of Europe, the same cotton kitchen towels are called tea towels. Both are lint-free, highly absorbent, and excellent for embroidery, screen printing, and polishing surfaces.
Three things separate premium cotton dish towels from average ones: thread count, weave type, and fiber content. Our flour sack dish towels are 130 thread count — a tight, dense count that creates the lint-free surface cotton kitchen towels are known for. The diagonal twill weave holds all fibers in place during use and washing. And they're 100% cotton — pure cotton is more absorbent, gets softer with washing, and accepts embroidery and print better than any synthetic blend. The result is a cotton dish towel that actually performs better the longer you use it.
Flour sack towels are flat-woven, 100% cotton kitchen towels with a tight diagonal weave — also known as cotton tea towels or flour sack dish towels. They differ from terry cloth (looped pile) and waffle-weave towels by having a flat, dense surface that is exceptionally lint-free and highly absorbent. The name comes from 19th-century homemakers who repurposed cotton flour sacks as kitchen textiles after the flour ran out.
Flour sack tea towels are one of the best fabrics for embroidery — both machine and hand embroidery. The flat, tight cotton weave hoops without distortion, holds stabilizer well, and produces crisp stitch definition that poly-cotton blends can't match. Our 27″ × 27″ square is the most popular size for embroidery because the large canvas handles full-size designs, monograms, and decorative borders comfortably.
Yes — and ours are guaranteed lint-free. The tight, flat diagonal weave holds all cotton fibers in place during use and washing. This is why flour sack dish towels and cotton tea towels are preferred over terry cloth for drying glassware, polishing stainless steel, and cleaning mirrors. At 130 thread count, the stable weave won't deteriorate or start shedding fibers after repeated washing.
Bleached flour sack dish towels achieve a bright, true-white color — ideal for printing and kitchen use where a crisp white is preferred. Unbleached (natural) flour sack towels retain the cotton's natural off-white or cream tone with no chemical processing. The natural version is the better choice for eco-conscious buyers, farmhouse and rustic kitchen aesthetics, and food applications where chemical-free fabric matters — bread proofing, cheese-making, and food contact surfaces.
Yes — flour sack kitchen towels are excellent for bread proofing. Lightly dampen the towel and cover your dough during bulk fermentation or final proofing. The tight cotton weave holds moisture without transferring fibers into the dough's surface crust. Also used as a liner for proofing baskets (bannetons). After use, machine wash warm with no fabric softener.
Machine wash warm with regular detergent. Tumble dry on low or medium. Avoid fabric softeners — they coat cotton fibers and reduce absorbency over time. Our flour sack kitchen towels are pre-shrunk and colorfast. For embroidered or printed towels, turn inside out before washing to extend the decoration life. Cotton dish towels become softer and more absorbent the more you wash them.
