The Size Bakers Reach For — And the Towel That Does the Rest, Too

At 33×38 inches, this is the largest flour sack towel in Mary's lineup — and it's no accident that 33×38 is also the standard size stocked by baker supply brands. When you need to cover a proofing bowl, drape a risen loaf, or handle a job the 27×27 is simply too small for, this is the towel.

Same 130 thread count diagonal weave. Same 4-side hem and corner loop. Same pre-washed, lint-free cotton. Just more of it — built for serious kitchen work, large-format embroidery and printing, and anyone who's ever thought their regular dish towel wasn't quite big enough.

How It Compares

The Full Size Lineup — Choose by Task

All sizes share the same 130 TC cotton, 4-side hem, and hanging loop. The difference is coverage.

19″ × 28″ Tea Towel Classic rectangular format. Good for drying dishes, lining baskets, and detailed embroidery work.
27″ × 27″ Standard — Best Seller The most popular size. Great all-purpose kitchen towel, embroidery canvas, and screen print blank.
This Listing 33″ × 38″ Jumbo — The Baker's Size More coverage for bread proofing, large batches, full-surface printing, and heavy kitchen work.
How People Use Them

More Surface Area. More Possibilities.

The extra 6–11 inches over a standard flour sack towel makes a real difference for tasks where coverage matters.

Bread Proofing & Sourdough The 33×38 is the size baker supply brands stock as standard. Drape it over a large proofing bowl to maintain moisture and airflow during the first rise. Dust with flour before the second proof to prevent sticking. The tight cotton weave breathes without letting a crust form on the dough.
Covering Dough & Baked Goods Large enough to cover a full sheet pan, a bread basket, or a batch of rolls. Use damp for fermentation, dry for keeping baked goods warm after they come out of the oven. The lint-free cotton won't transfer fibers to your dough or crust.
Heavy Kitchen Drying At 33×38 you can wipe down a full cutting board, dry a large cast iron pan, or spread it flat to drain washed produce. The diagonal weave is highly absorbent and streak-free — no fibers left behind on glasses or polished surfaces.
Cheese Straining & Food Prep The larger surface makes straining easier — more fabric to gather and twist. Works for homemade ricotta, straining yogurt or kefir, wrapping and draining fresh cheese. Denser than cheesecloth so it holds up better over repeated use and washing.
Large-Format Embroidery & Printing The extra canvas lets you go bigger — full-width scenic designs, top-to-bottom patterns, and oversized typography that wouldn't fit on a 27×27. Popular with screen printers and embroidery studios producing statement tea towels for retail and wholesale.
Farmhouse Display & Gifting The jumbo size hangs beautifully — more fabric drape on an oven door or towel bar. Bundle 2–3 as a hostess or housewarming gift, or embroider a full recipe or family name across the whole surface.
Bakers Take Note

Why 33×38 Is the Standard Baker Supply Size

When bakers go looking for a proofing cloth, they don't search for any flour sack towel — they look for the 33×38. It's the size baker supply brands have standardized around, because it's large enough to cover a full proofing bowl, drape over a banneton, or wrap a loaf for the second rise without the towel pulling tight or leaving the dough exposed.

The 130 thread count diagonal weave is breathable enough to let fermentation gases escape, dense enough to trap moisture, and smooth enough to release dough without sticking when properly floured. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk — so the size you see is the size that shows up.

First Rise (Fermentation) Dampen the towel slightly before draping over your proofing bowl. Keeps the surface of the dough moist without trapping too much heat.
Second Rise (Proofing) Dust the towel generously with flour or rice flour before lining a banneton or bowl. The dough releases cleanly without tearing the surface.
After Baking Drape a dry towel over fresh loaves to keep the crust from hardening too fast. Absorbs steam without sealing it in.
Care for Baking Towels No fabric softener — it leaves a residue that transfers to dough. A splash of white vinegar in the rinse keeps them soft and odor-free.

For Embroiderers & Printers: A Bigger Canvas

The 33×38 opens up design possibilities that the 27×27 simply doesn't have room for — full-width recipes, edge-to-edge scenes, oversized script lettering, or multi-element layouts. The 130 thread count diagonal weave is stable, hoops flat, and takes ink and thread cleanly across the full surface.

Hoop Size The larger surface accommodates an 8×8 or 8×12 hoop comfortably. Use a floating technique for large centered designs to avoid hoop marks at the edges.
Stabilizer Cutaway for dense fills and large lettering; tearaway for lighter designs. The tight weave is stable enough that floating is rarely needed for medium-density designs.
Screen Printing Full-width designs up to ~30 inches across register cleanly. Pre-washed means no sizing to remove before printing — inks adhere directly to the fabric.
After Decorating Cold wash, tumble dry low. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk — the design stays centered and in-register after washing.

FAQ

Common Questions

What size flour sack towel is best for bread proofing?

33×38 is the size baker supply brands use as their standard, and for good reason — it's large enough to fully cover a proofing bowl, drape over a banneton, or wrap a large loaf without pulling tight or exposing the dough. The 27×27 works for smaller batches, but for anything full-sized or larger, the 33×38 gives you the coverage you need. See our full guide to bread proofing with flour sack towels for more detail on technique.

How is a flour sack towel different from cheesecloth for straining?

Flour sack towels are woven much more densely than cheesecloth — they're durable enough to strain, twist, and wash repeatedly without falling apart or leaving fibers in your food. The 130 thread count cotton is also lint-free, which cheesecloth is not. For tasks like straining yogurt, ricotta, or kefir, flour sack towels are often preferred by home cheesemakers precisely because they hold together and can be washed clean for reuse indefinitely. The 33×38 size gives you more surface area to work with when gathering and twisting than the 27×27.

Are these pre-washed? Do they need to be washed before the first use?

Yes — every towel is pre-washed and pre-shrunk before it ships. You can use them straight out of the bag. For baking use specifically, the pre-washing removes any finishing agents that might transfer to dough, so these are food-safe right away. They become more absorbent with each subsequent wash as the cotton fibers open up further.

Why buy the 33×38 instead of the 27×27?

The 33×38 is the right choice when you need more coverage than a standard 27×27 can provide. The main cases: covering a large proofing bowl or banneton during bread making, handling jumbo kitchen tasks, straining larger batches, or printing/embroidering designs that need more canvas than 27 inches wide. If you use your towels mostly for everyday drying, wiping, and smaller craft work, the 27×27 is the better value. Both share the same 130 TC cotton and construction quality.

Can I use these for large-format embroidery or screen printing?

Yes — the 33×38 is popular with embroidery studios and screen printers who want a larger canvas for full-width designs, oversized lettering, or edge-to-edge patterns. The 130 thread count diagonal weave is stable and holds thread and ink cleanly across the full surface. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk, so your design won't shift after the first wash. For large quantities for a print or embroidery business, our wholesale blank towels collection offers volume discounts starting at 60 units.

Do you sell these in larger quantities?

Yes — for orders of 60 or more, our wholesale blank towels collection offers significant volume discounts with no account required. Pricing adjusts automatically at checkout based on quantity.

Excellent towels!

I simply love how thick and oversized these towels are. It was just the towels I was looking for to replace my dingy, old flour sack towels I had purchased at an art fair. I don't think I will embroider them but wish I could.
