The Classic Kitchen Tea Towel Shape — Longer, Narrower, and Built for How Most People Actually Use Them

The 19×28 is the traditional tea towel format — the rectangular shape that hangs over an oven handle, drapes over a shoulder, and covers a loaf pan perfectly. Where the 27×27 square is the go-to for embroidery and crafts, the 19×28 is the shape most kitchens reach for first.

Same 130 thread count diagonal weave, same 4-side hemming, same pre-washed 100% cotton — just in the format that fits the way a tea towel is actually used. Available in white (bleached) and natural (unbleached). Set of 12.

Why the 19×28 Shape Works

Built for the Way Tea Towels Are Actually Used

The rectangular format isn't just traditional — it's functional. The length gives you more reach, the narrower width is easier to fold and hang, and the shape works naturally for the tasks most people actually do.

Drying Dishes & Glassware The 28″ length gives you enough towel to dry a large pot or wrap around a full-size dish. Lint-free cotton won't streak glassware. Absorbs and dries fast between uses.
Oven Handle & Shoulder The classic hang — draped over an oven handle or a chef's shoulder. The 19×28 proportion fits this perfectly, staying in place without bunching or falling off.
Embroidery & Cross-Stitch The rectangular format is popular for embroidery designs that run along the bottom hem — a row of botanicals, a name, a border pattern. The long edge gives you a natural design zone.
Custom Printed Tea Towels The 19×28 is the standard format for printed tea towels — recipes, illustrations, maps, and holiday designs all work naturally in the rectangle. Available for DTG, screen print, and edge-to-edge.
Gift Sets The classic tea towel shape makes an immediately recognizable gift. Embroider a name or monogram along the hem, or bundle a plain set as a practical housewarming or kitchen gift.
Bread & Food Covering Drape over rising dough, cover a bowl of sourdough starter, or line a bread basket. The rectangular shape covers loaf pans and oval bannetons more naturally than a square towel.

A Note for Embroiderers

The 19×28 is popular for embroiderers who work along the hem — a row of flowers, a kitchen quote, a monogram — rather than a centered square design. The long lower edge gives you a natural canvas. The 130 thread count diagonal weave hoops cleanly without distortion and holds thread color beautifully on both white and natural backgrounds.

Design Placement The bottom 4–6″ of the towel is the classic zone for tea towel embroidery. Leave enough clearance from the hem edge for the hoop to grip cleanly.
Stabilizer Cutaway for dense fills; tearaway for lighter lettering and outlines. The weave is stable — floating is rarely needed.
Hooping the Rectangle Fold the top half back before hooping to keep it out of the way. A 5×7 or 6×10 hoop works well for most hem designs on this size.
After Stitching Cold wash, tumble dry low. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk — your design stays exactly where you put it.

Prefer it printed? We do that in-house.

FAQ

Common Questions

What's the difference between the 19×28 and the 27×27?

The 19×28 is the classic rectangular tea towel shape — longer and narrower, designed to hang over an oven handle or drape over a shoulder. The 27×27 is a larger square — more surface area, popular for embroidery, bread proofing, cheese making, and screen printing. Both use the same 130 thread count cotton and construction. The choice comes down to how you plan to use them.

Do these come in colors other than white and natural?

The 19×28 is available in white (bleached) and natural (unbleached). For a full range of 8 colors including gray, black, red, rose taupe, plaza taupe, and royal blue, see our 27×27 flour sack towels.

Are these good for embroidery?

Yes — the 19×28 is particularly popular for hem-line embroidery, where the design runs along the bottom edge of the towel. The long lower edge gives you a natural design zone for a row of botanicals, a kitchen phrase, or a border pattern. The 130 thread count diagonal weave is stable, hoops cleanly, and doesn't distort under tension. Use cutaway stabilizer for dense fills, tearaway for lighter designs.

Are these pre-washed? Will they shrink?

Yes — every towel is pre-washed and pre-shrunk before it ships. The 19×28 size is the finished, washed measurement. No need to pre-wash before use or before embroidering. They become more absorbent with repeated washing as the cotton fibers open up.

Can these be custom printed?

Yes — we offer three in-house printing methods on the 19×28: DTG (no minimum, unlimited colors), screen printing (up to 4 Pantone colors, best for runs of 24+), and edge-to-edge printing (full surface coverage, from 25 pieces per design). The 19×28 rectangular format is the standard shape for printed tea towels — recipes, illustrations, and designs all work naturally in this format.

They're nice but

Note that the tea towels are the same material as the flour sack towels, so if you're looking for a smoother weave this ain't it. Also, if you're a hand dyer, be aware that the thread is poly and so your procion dyes won't take to the stitching. Otherwise, they're towels!
